[RP Event] The Old Hag Ac22a810

"It's all that Marsten bitch's fault!"

The old woman rails in the public square of Hartshorn.  While she is one of the few speaking out against Lady Marsten, she speaks what many of the smallfolk are thinking.

"How many of you have lost sons and husbands over the last four years!  And why?  Because we needed to go fight foreigners in a foreign land?  Because the Targaryens could not decide who would sit on that ugly lump of pointy iron?"

The old woman, Crinda, had lived on the outskirts of Hartshorn for years.  The outspoken woman was widely regarded as a witch.  She followed the Old ways, had a fearless disposition and a tongue that could flay skin.  Most of the time she was avoided, and she was fine with that, but she was also rightly regarded as one of the best healers in the area.

Over the many years of her life, she had successfully ushered most of the town into being.  There were fewer stillbirths under her care, and even when she could not save the child, she almost always saved the mother.  She had nursed many a Hartshorn smallfolk through disease and injury.  They regularly went to her for potions and cures.  Witch she may be, in every sense of the word, but charlatan she was not.

"What do we care what happens in distant lands?  What do we care who sits on the Iron throne?  And why did we give so much blood for either?  We are Valeman.  We should keep ourselves to ourselves.  It's about time the Marstens start looking after their own House instead of dangling on the strings of others.   We would never be in this sorry state if her Mother was still in charge!"

This is an RP event.  There are no right or wrong answers.  How the players handle the situation is completely up to them.  All options are open.  (Up to and including killing her.)  The resolution to this event will depend on the RP of the players.

Choose one ability and specialty.  It can be any ability, and any specialty.  However you must justify the roll with your RP.  Target is TN9.

Event Rewards:

1DoS - Gain 1 Glory
2DoS - Gain an additional 1 Glory
3DoS - Gain a TDP
4DoS - Gain a Trait of your choice related to your RP

The conclusion will be based on the RP and rolls.  Have fun with it.  (However, if anyone does decide to hack her down in the middle of the square, just remember, some NPCs have DP too.  Laughing )

Regyn don't grow old on the streets of myr by drawing attention to yourself. That is what tap rooms are for. However do you have a higher chance of living to reasonable age if you listen to your surroundings. And listening is what Regyn was very good at. So he worked the crowd, in a way that he was never in one place for too long. He listen to the mutterings and the murmurs of agreement, as well so as noting who voice disagreement. But he had been there long enough that he new which Washerwoman would be the most likely to give good information, or at very least juicy gossip, on this to crazed woman yelling in the streets as the case may be.

Stalking through the town square, Luke ignored both the old woman and man as he entered the trading post.  He dropped off ten brace of rabbit, already skinned and cleaned, picked up some salt, flour, candle wax, and even a little honey.  Honey was ludicrously expensive right now, but the hunting had been good and he decided to treat himself.

He left and started for home, but did not get far.

"Luke.  You should be as angry as anyone.  Your Father was a great man!  Were it not for the Marstens going to war, he would still be alive here to protect us."

Strange you never called him a great man when he was alive you nasty old cow.

"So?  How does standing in the snow railing about it change anything?"

"You don't blame Lady Marsten for getting your Father killed far away from home?"

"Yeah."  Luke shrugged.  "What does that matter?  Nobles have been killing each other, or using us to kill each other, for as long as there have been nobles.  We never seem to run out.  Stop making people feel like shit about things they can nothing about.  Do something useful.  Go cook the hares I just brought if you have no-one to heal."

He turned to leave but Crinda was not done with him.  "Don't you talk to me like that young man.  I brought you into this world!"

Luke turned to stare at the old woman.  "You think because you were there for my first day you have some hold over the rest?" He glared at woman.  "I'll talk to you any way I want, you viscous old hag.  People are scared, tired, cold and hungry.  They don't need you pouring venom on their wounds.  You have a problem with her Ladyship?  Go talk to her.  See how far it gets you."

Turning, Luke stalked off leaving Crinda looking like he'd just slapped her across the face.

"Easy," Garlen puts a hand on the shoulder of a hotheaded young guardsman -- one of the few younger than him -- and tosses his head.  "Go help the lads with the wagon."

Then he steps forward, just like he'd not wanted that young hothead to do.

"We've lost sons and husbands, friends and brothers, aye.  But for good reason.  For duty and honor.  As you're sworn to the Lady Marsten," his blue eye scans the crowd, giving that a moment to sink in, "She's sworn to the Targaryens.  Why should she care who sits on a throne?  Because it's her honor to care, and to obey, and to set things right as best she can when the armies march."

Another toss of his head, this one like a horse tossing its mane, his sandy hair flung high in his frustration.

"And you lot, you already know this, because we are Valemen.  And if we know anything about anything, it's honor.  If the Lady hadn't answered when the call for banners went up, she'd be no Lady at all.  And if your sons and husbands hadn't answered, they'd be no Valemen."

He lifts his chin a little, dares anyone there not to meet and hold his blue-eyed gaze.

"Miss them, aye.  Grieve for them.  But don't shame them by claiming they should've stayed home, cowards, and don't dishonor them by talking sour about the Lady they fought for."

And that's it.  No reminding them who he is, what he could do -- legally -- if he chose.  No drawing his blade, or even pointedly hooking a thumb in his swordbelt to remind them of it.  No violence.  No lashing out.  Just reminding them of the best they're capable of, and a quiet hope they'll do better on their own.  That's who he is.

Harwin hauled the plank towards the tavern at an even pace. He was off duty right now and he had little better to do than help out around the town. He’d long ago learned that he made more friends with honest and hard work than any of his “kind” words or smiles.

He couldn’t help but hear the old woman’s words and be drawn into the gathering crowd. He set the plank down carefully before joining the fray. It wasn't long before his deep voice boomed across the mountain air.

“A wolf may spend its time hunting for the pack but when its pack leader calls...it best listen or regret it. I’ve heard tale of how brave and honorable Valemen are, so I’m expecting most know that to be truth. Her Ladyship and her soldiers are here and look after these lands we shall.“

He kept his distance from the old lady as he slowly pulled his knife out.

“And when times are toughest…” The knife plunges into his left side hilt deep and drags down a bit shallower but enough to draw more blood.

“You’ll know that me or someone like me will bleed for this town so these fine folk can go about their lives as best they may.”

He takes a deep breath to convince his body the pain is gone before wiping the knife clean on his shirt and sheathing it. He looks around at all the faces staring at him in shock before walking off to grab his plank. He lifts it swiftly as if nothing had occurred and walks away. There were other errands to be done and words had never gotten him very far in his life anyway.

Mayhaps I’ll stop by the Maester’s later, doubtin he’ll be surprised that such is what passes as cleverness for a man such as myself.

"Yooo!"  The crone screeches, pointing an emaciated, crooked finger at him and causing the crowd he is trying to skirt to take note of him.  He wants only to conduct his business and move on, ignoring her rantings.  People will talk in times like these.  People will point fingers and look for someone to blame for their miseries, not that blame will solve their problems.

There are guards and others are about, let them deal with trouble makers, that's their job, not his.  He was only trying to get back to the keep after purchasing herbs form the trading post.  Steward Gareth was going to be most unimpressed at the coin Ronnel laid down for the few sad bits of plant.

"Pig-man!" she hisses.  "There he is people.  Look at him!  All plump and round while everyone else starves!  That's your Lady for you.  We shiver and weaken while her pets in the keep fatten themselves on the food we should have!"

Maester Ronnel's chins quiver as he looks about at the angry crowd.  He is saved, oddly by Harwin stabbing himself in the side!  When the warrior a talks off, Ronnel moves to follow but stops.  The crone's words against the Lady who has treated him so fairly cut deep.  Gathering what courage he has he stands silently pointing his own accusation at the old woman.

"You are a hateful and stupid woman!  What good do you do haranguing folk like this?  Tell me crone!  What good comes of your... your bitching!?"  Ronnel covers his mouth in shock.  It's the worst word he's ever said aloud and his anger flares at himself for her vitriol.

"P.. people, please!  Think about this!  How does blaming the Lady help you?  Will you get more food from being angry?  Will the snow stop by hating her?  This woman is hateful!  She wishes only not to be alone in her anger and frustration.  Yes, I am fat.  I was fat long before I got here and I will be fat even if I starve to death alongside you.  Go ahead, join in her stupidity if you like.  Better, get about your business.  Go back to your families if you have any or see to your friends.  I for one will not stand and shiver just to listen to the feeble, useless rantings of a bitter old hag!"

The Maester is very glad when a guardsmen falls into step behind him and escorts him back to the keep.

The old woman had largely ceased her ranting by the time Corrine, Ben, and Regyn arrived, though she was still pacing around the town square, occasionally having an outburst, most people just avoiding her. Corrine remembered then that her name was Crinda. She had heard many tales of her complaining about one thing or other, since even her father's youth.

Corrine nodded at Ben, indicating he should speak with the old woman directly.

"Go put that Blackthorne charm to good use."

She dismounted gracefully and approached the centre of the square, beckoning to the smallfolk to come closer and listen. She had dressed in simple black wool & leather, her finery gone, not putting on airs. She did not wish to insult them.

"People of Hartsbridge, please, do not be swayed by Crinda's bitter words. While her frustration at our hardships is understandable, without the hard work by myself, Lord Benedict, and our men, things would be much worse. Would you have preferred The Vale to be burned to ash too? Like The Reach and the Crownlands? If it was not for my constant campaigning for peace and sanity, the ire of the dragons would have turned on us, and there would be nobody left alive for Crinda to blame."

She held out her hands in an open, beseeching gesture.

"Yes, things are hard right now. I feel it too, Castle walls do not make me or my family invincible. We too feel the cold, the hunger, the grief of loss. And each of your losses pains me greatly. I am doing all I can to keep our hard-won community alive. Once again, I come bearing supplies, all that we can spare, and I give it freely to you all. It may not be enough for Crinda, but I would never abandon any of you, Crinda included. The war has taken much from us. Do not let it take your compassion too. Snapping at eachother and pointing fingers helps no-one."

Ben peers over to Crinda and back to his beautiful wife. On his face was a frightened look, that quickly divulges into a wicked grin. "Not exactly the woman I had hoped you would give me permission to charm, but if my Lady commands. Then so be it."

Ben circumvents the crowd, and draws near his intended from behind. The numerous layers of worn clothing do little to disguise the up-jumped knight from the Bite, now Lord. His name had traveled far and wide over the past years. There were not many in the Vale who could not easily recognizes Lord Marsten.

Without turning to address Ben she spoke. "Has she sent her brave Lord husband to banish the witch from Hartsbridge? Afraid to address me directly?" The old-one's words drip with venom and disdain, not necessarily directed at Ben.

The two were associated from Ben's time squiring at Hartshorn. The Old Ways and a quiet need for sleeping aids had brought them together on occasion. Now that acquaintance was being tested.

"Gran, you have proven wise time and again. You have ushered in new life and eased other's passings. Now comes the 'but'. You have been wrong and you have lost lives. The scale you play on is but a tenth of my Lady's."

A gentle hand upon her shoulder accompanies the not so gentle, but true words. There was no abrupt move to dislodge his display of friendship. The woman had always appreciated brutal honesty to false courtesies. Malice or not this woman could prove important to their survival through this winter.

PostSubject: Re: [RP Event] The Old Hag   [RP Event] The Old Hag EmptyTue Jan 24, 2017 12:21 am

"So it is that way then."  The old woman cackled.  "I speak the truth to all of you and you are blind to it.  Fine.  I shall speak a few more truths and be done."

First, she turns to Regyn, skulking at the back of the crowd.  "You think you can hide from me, Regyn Thulan?  You have run very far, but not far enough.  You cannot run from your past, neither can we all.  Fate stalks you like a Shadowcat.  Beware the red warrior."

"Hunter boy.  You think your anger and disdain are a shield?  Your armor may be valyrian steel, but inside you are soft as clay.  Bit by bit, inch by inch you will become what you hate."

She glares at Harwin.  "Had her ladyship and her solders stayed in the Vale rather than marching off to foreign lands to fight a war that was none of our business, perhaps they would be here now to protect us.  You think yourself a wolf, but I see the wolf that hunt's you.  It grows larger every year, nipping at your heels.  You can feel it's breath on your neck and soon your luck will run out."

"You think that sword of yours frightens me boy Captain?  I am old and will die soon without your help.  Such a carefully crafted image you have.  Such a mask of pretense.  Eventually your mask will eat your soul and the only thing left of you will be the image."

"The pig-boy Maester who scurries away.  Do you think he will stand against the suffering to come?  When the frozen wrath of the Gods falls full on Hartshorn, he will be as helpless as the rest of you against the onslaught."

Her gaze falls on Ben.  "Pretty words.  Will those pretty words warm your people as they freeze?  You are right, my Lord.  The scale is not even close to the same.  I make a mistake, someone dies.  Thanks to Lady Marsten's mistakes, thousands have died and many more will die.

Finally, she turns to Lady Marsten.  "You are not evil.  You are worse.  You are foolish, willful and idealistic.  You are a child who believes you can touch the sky if only you can climb the mountain.  You had dreams of shining world, but those dreams are shattered and here we now must live amongst the ashes."

Before hobbling off to her little shack, she leans on her staff and her finger sweeps across the crowd.  Her gravelly voice seems to ring throughout the square.

Many standing here will be dead very soon.  The Old Gods are just as angry as the New, and mark my words, neither her 'Ladyship' nor the boy King will be able to shield you from their wrath.  Oceans of blood have been spilled and lives lost for greed and power.  But our lives do not belong to us, or the nobles, to be spent like coin.  Our lives belong to the Gods and they will soon demand repayment for so many souls lost for so little gain.

Maester Ronnel stops in his tracks.  Pig-boy turns and marches back into the square.  He raises his voice for those nearby to hear, but he does not shout.

"Thousands of our men perished in this war between our rulers' family.  Thousands more will die because they are no longer here to help and protect us.

Tell me, Mistress Crinda; if the Lady had not sent our men to fight, how many of us would be alive now?  How many after the combatants had turned their dragons towards the Vale?  How many women, children, the aged, the infirm?  Do you think dragon flame only harms soldiers?  How wonderful a world it would be if there were such justice in it.  If soldiers only killed soldiers.  If they did not rape and murder and pillage and if dragons only slew warriors.

Where would we hide?  Our stone keep would melt like the wax of cheap candles before their flames.  Our forests would no longer stand and hold game for our bellies and wood for our fires.

Lady Corrine did not go south and start the feud which brought war and devastation to all the lands of Westeros.  The Lady did not bring this war to the Vale.  She only did the best she could with what she had.

The River lands are a smoking ruin as are the Crown lands and many other places.  Places where not only many died, but those left have much less than we with which to feed the people through this awful winter."  Ronnel shakes his head, his chins waggling.  When he speaks again, his voice is softer.

"By taking a side we faced one enemy with dragons, not two.  By taking a side, we took the war to their lands and out of our own.  Yes, the gods old and new are angry, how could they not be at such waste, such terrible loss?  But look to some other source upon which will fall their heavy gaze."  He does not turn this time, but waits for her rebuttal, if any.  His voice is sorrowful at the end.

"I will not say we are lucky, for we are hardly that.  But we are yet better off than most.  By placing blame, we do no good now and only more suffering can come of it.  I apologise, Mistress for that word I used against you earlier.  It was borne of anger and frustration."  he is trembling by the end, having fought against the urge to run, to hide and not be noticed and judged by all those who see him.

"Don't let her intimidate you, Maester," Corrine said, softly. "Blame is just a way of putting one's fear and hurt onto someone else. Pity her, for it is all she has left. We have brought supplies to the people. We have done our best. Nothing will be good enough for her."

Slowly the hag turns and says, softly for the first time.  "Your best will not be enough.  If you could see what I see, you would understand."

[Crinda - Persuasion (Intimidate) +1D Ronnel: 1d6 1 26]
[Successes determined when compared to your Intrigue Defense.]

She stamps her staff on the ground and her eyes roll back into her head.  Everyone in the square winces back at the sight.  The white orbs stare at Maester Ronnel.

Her voice is no longer gravelly, but rich and resonant as she makes her pronouncement.  "I call upon the Old Gods to make known their wrath to this foolish man as they have made it known to me, so that he can warn this foolish woman to whom he is so loyal.  I have failed in the task you bestowed upon me.  Let the burden fall upon him."

As her words echo throughout the square, her eyes return to normal and she hobbles off without another word.  Those in the square do not impede her passage, too dumbstruck or fearful.

[Maester Ronnel is assigned the 'Cursed' disadvantage until the end of Diremonth and is plagued with disjointed nightmares portenting 'Flashfreeze'.]

The Maester looks at Corrine and smiles gently.  "Yes, yes of course, Lady..."  Then his eyes cross, he wets himself and collapses into the mud and snow.  His last conscious thought is:  Either the ground is farther away than I suspected or I am taller.  He lands with a squishing thud and only someone's muddy boot keeps him from cracking his head open.

Regyn goes white at the mention of the red warrior, the past dealings with the red priests had left a bitter taste in his mouth and one sibling less. she can not possibly know if that. It was better for my sister and myself. We would have starved to death of she had not... the comforting lies Regyn had told himself did not stand up to the old women's words. I must find out what she knows.

Ben shakes and lowers his head, with disapproval. Moving pass the old woman he speaks defiantly. "So, that is your choice. Our world is set to freeze and you stomp the flames of alliances that may save us all."

Quick steps bring him to the maester's side. From next to his wife he commands Ronnel's escort. "Fetch his bag!"

He places a hand on Corrine's shoulder, making sure she is still aware and in the moment. "Can you stabilize him, so we can get him into the cart?"

Corrine propped Ronnel's head up while the wagon was fetched, its load of supplies now removed and being distributed by other guardsmen.
